As an avid diver I always wanted to know a little about a place prior to heading out there and spending all my hard earnt money.........

Having worked in the dive industry in Australia, Fiji and Europe I have now settled here on Koh Tao in Thailand. This small island in the Gulf of Thailand is a true place of beauty with white sandy beaches lined with palm trees, amazing sunsets every day and of course the amazing diving all less than an hour by boat from the island.

There is everything from reef diving, wrecks, and even some of the deepest cave systems in Asia right here on our doorstep.

From getting off the catamaran (only transport to the island) you walk down the wooden pier to a divers haven. Right away you look alongside into the clear 30'C waters and you have hundreds of fish right there. Moving down the pier you are greeted by a wealth of choices for your diving operator whilst here, this choice and variety means prices are very competitive and are actually some of the cheapest in the world for diving courses. Fun diving is also very cheap (1 dive will cost you roughly 20 sterling).

Sairee beach/village is the place to be on Koh Tao with the majority of the operators located along this 5+km stretch of white sand. There is everything a holiday maker could want here, chilled out sunset bars playing mellow guitar and reggae music, shops, international restaurants, even some party bars where you can let your hair down following a great day's diving.

There are many local dive sites (within 10 minutes by boat) but to get the real wow factor and the high possibility of seeing a whaleshark you need to head to the slightly further sites (60 minutes by boat). This is one of the places in the world where the whaleshark is prolific, we have sightings all year round, some months more than others with all being as special as the last.
In 2011 we had 2 new artificial reefs donated to the island, 1 was a former Thai and US navy ship and the other was a former Koh Tao liveaboard. These are a great addition to the island's diversity and range to now bring wreck divers to Koh Tao. Wrecks are a massive part of life out here with Koh Tao having a designated technical and wreck diving liveaboard (May-August) where we can get out to some of the distant wrecks of the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea to visit some fantastic old wrecks in up to 80m of water.

As the only BSAC centre of excellence here on Koh Tao we at Big Blue Tech provide amazing services to many BSAC clubs and divers wanting to do training, day boat, liveaboard or shore diving. We also provide land activities for families who have non diving spouses and children, thus enabling you to combine a magnificent diving trip with a family holiday. We are also a TDI technical facility with a full time tech crew on site to accommodate anything you may need with anything tech related.

This is not an advert it is more of an information write-up on the place I fell in love with from a diving and paradise perspective. I hope this helps and if anyone requires any info on coming I'd be more than happy to help.

Hi Sara,

Thanks for that! I will be heading over in your direction mid June. Can I ask, is there much to do for a none diving partner to do? I need to convince my girlfriend who doesn't dive that its a cool place to visit without the pull of diving.
