HMS Veteran was one of two escort destroyers (along with HMS Vanoc) on Convoy RB.1, made-up of Great Lakes steamers. It was rumoured that RB.1 was a "decoy" convoy designed to attract U-boat packs away from a much larger, more important convoy sailing further to the south at the same time.

Two books have been published about the events surrounding RB.1 and the sinking of HMS Veteran. The most readily available one is:

Reed, J.H. (2000) Convoy Maniac RB.1. The Book Guild Ltd. [Recollections of WW2 convoy duty.] Amazon.co.uk

This book includes transcripts of ULTRA messages passing backwards and forwards between the escort vessels and Washington right up to the time of Veteran's disappearance.

The other book has been published in South Africa and is not readily available.

If you want any of the other information I have on Veteran (including a photo), please contact me on e-mail (stewart.townsend@hp.com).
