Hi there

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a great company / destination to go to for a weekend in order to do the open water course? I myself have the open water and the advanced but my boyfriend needs to learn from scratch. We are going diving for our honeymoon in July and so just need to get him qualified before then. We'd rather go abroad as it's sunnier and warmer!! We were thinking perhaps Malta? We can't really afford any time off work so a weekend would be ideal. We'd rather go somewhere nice though rather than a cheap group deal - any suggestions??

Thank you!!

Hi, A weekend won't be long enough to do all your coarse work and diving to be qualified, The best way would be to do all of your theory work and pool work in the uk and do your open water dives abroad as a referal, I don't know of any dive centres in Malta , Sorry , regards steve

Hi i would reccomend red sea diving safari's working out of Mara salam in red sea (obviously)

The price for a week half board ( you really need a week and owe it to yourself) at the moment is less than £300 ( thomas cook) and the dive conditions are perfect for your needs

Give them a shout im sure their team of friendly instructors will be able to hook you up!

Have fun!

There is a padi center mellihah bay hotel, i used them for a try dive and were very good. the hotel it self is also a very nice place to stay.

but if u want sun, try Tenerife... i have just done my open water course with sol divers, they also offer free accommodation if you do a dive coures or dive pack with them ( a studio apt with a private pool in a vilage 10 mins from the airport)... all you need to do is pay for the flights. or they have a 1 bed apartment at the ho;tel were the dive center is for £150 per week.

if you need any more info give me a shout

As already stated a weekend is not long enough fgor the OWD course. In Malta I would recommend excellent company and reasonably priced.

Idealy you need at least 5 days, so a weeks holiday would be better.

At the moment youcan get flights to Tenerife for about £80 each...return. This coupled with the suggestion of free accomodation from Neilsplace would be cheap...

the course over here in Tenerife are about 300€ and are with qualified padi instructors....

As for malta....I love malta and there is a dive center called it is connected to the mellieha bay hotel in the north of Malta.

Have fun which ever you choose

not sure if you are sorted yet, but I am a new member and saw your posting.

I am an advance diver also:

My top tip would be Lanzarote and speak to Mick @

He had a dive centre on Malta and left for Lanzarote for better diving. He runs a small very friendly centre, has transport for pick ups, can sort accomodation etc. I always dive with them when ia ma there as he DOES NOT do groups, so the most people I have ever dived with there is 2. Some great diving to be had, my last trip, plenty of big grouper, sting rays, eagle rays, angel shark, seahorses, trumpet fish and much more, but the best ever was seeing my first manta ray..awesome!

Top centre, top chap, very safe, is more interested in quality than getting your cash. Very good for training and advancing your skills, as a beginer or advanced. I am going out to do my "rescue diver" with him.

Very good all year round weather over there, great island, very relaxed.

Water temp today 20 degrees.

His tel number is 0034680195729

If you dicide to visit Faial island in the Azores Archipelago, you can dive and take your open water course with Dive Azores.
Azores is rated like a new destination for diving. Whale watching, beautifull nature and peacefulness, are also a special reasons to visit.
The best time to dive in Azores, Faial island is between June and September.
Have a look at,

Best regards.
