Hi All

I'm due to visit Australia for 6 weeks in mid June/July and am travellinhg up the east coast for the first 2 weeks of july and plan to do a fair bit of diving with my fiancee (both of us are AOW).

Does anyone have any suggestions/experiance of good dive sites and reputable companies to dive with?

Any advice much appreciated.

I spent three weeks just North of Cairns last November and dived out of Port Douglas and Cairns.

I can recommend a company called Haba who operate out of Port Douglas but I think they pick up people from quite a way around. It's just day trips, no overnights, but we found that they didn't have the same numbers of divers onboard as some others and were well prepared to cater for different experience levels.

If you're in Cairns itself then you're spoilt for choice - we went on a two-night trip on the Kangaroo Explorer. Now they had a few logistical problems at that time due to a broken down boat which caused a few problems with waiting around and, heaven forbid, running out of beer in the bar! But I had to question their dive organisation as well - although they did take us to the best of the dive sites we visited... I think the company was the Cairns Dive Centre. I wouldn't say steer clear of them as they were far from being bad/dangerous, I think we just caught them at a bad time.

If you get to Cairns, look for Haba - can heartily recommend them. If you're looking for overnight trips then just take a wander around (Cairns isn't that big) and see which one takes your fancy.

Oh - and it's not cheap, so save up well if you want to do a lot of diving...
