Notes : |
Position 53 34 97N;03 50 46W. Built in East Germany the 988 ton Antiguan registered Cargo vessel Ardlough left Garston for Belfast carrying a cargo of coal, steel and Newsprint. En route she reported taking in water in number one hold and that the pumps were unable to cope , on the 26 September 1988 she began to sink and her crew were taken off by a RAF helicopter. She now lies at a depth of 40m and stands some 17m high ,strewn about the surrounding sea bed are the containers she was carrying at the time some of which were reported to be carrying hazardous waste. When she originally sank she was lying on her side but amazingly she was last reported as being upright and relatively intact and has since been marked with a south cardinal buoy by trinity house. She is also well fished and as a consequence is covered in monofilament fishing line.
