PLACES TO DIVE UK INLAND DIVES

Alton Water

Holbrook (near Ipswich). The preferred area for divers is near the jetty, where the depth is 8-10 metres. Due to the multipurpose nature of the site SMBs are mandatory. There is a café, changing facilities and showers. A good location for training, and for the those wishing to combine diving with another watersport.

Unfortunately Alton Water is currently closed to divers after a complaint to the HSE about the safety of the platform and will be until the situation is resolved.

Diving in Alton Water is now suspended for the forseeable future. A complaint has been made directly to the HSE by person or persons unknown concerning the safety of the platform. The Alton Management committee now has to decide whether to call in the HSE to inspect the platform and recommend modifications, remove the platform or to continue to ban diving in the lake indefinitely. Despite the massive reduction in the usefulness of the place following the restrictions last year, this is still a significant kick in the teeth for local divers and clubs. I hope that a sensible way forward can be found.

Hi to all readers of UK diving If this does not seem too inappropriate? Can I ask all readers to vote for me; I am standing for BSAC national council. As a diabetic I want to encourage as many disabled people into the sport. I also hope to see the age that clubs can start training divers be reduced from 14 to 12 at the individual diving officers discretion. I will also listen to as many divers as possible to see what you want from BSAC. This in turn will help me guide BSAC in the direction that the members desire. If I can ever be of any assistance please do contact me. Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Kind Regards Robert Higgie Email rhiggie@bsac.co.uk
