PLACES TO DIVE UK INLAND DIVES

Vivian Quarry

Vivian Quarry is in Llanberis. With Pardarn Lake on your left, keep on the road and don't turn right into the village itself. Go through two sets of traffic lights and just after the second set there is a brown sign advertising the quarrying museum on the left. Follow these signs to the museum carpark. As you enter cross the train tracks again, and on the rightbvthere is a little hut by an archway. The dive centre is in the hut, and the quarry is through the arch. Vivian now has a shop, air, toilets and first aid.

Vivian is borderline for altitiude so care is advised. In the water you can expect upto 18 metres and good visibility. There is a blast house and a storehouse, but this is not very stable and entry is not recommended.

Had a brilliant day Sunday at Vivian, first time there for a couple of years, the vis was superb and the ladder to get out excellent. Will be there again this Sunday.

Vivian Quarry is opened 7 days a week - there are no leasing problems - the lease is secured for at least 10 years - This is what I have been told after ringing the diving centre direct on 01286 870889. The guys that are running the centre would like to know where it was read, that the quarry was closed and of the leasing problems. Having been diving in Vivian for many years I was delighted that it re-opened, after a six month closure. Vivian is not a site for deep diving, but it is clear and idilic - it is a family day out and good for training in the early grades, as well as testing equipment. Comments on the site as the one below - asking if it is closed, could very well deter divers from going there, thinking it was true and it was closed - I suggest like me, if you had a serious question, which could be damaging - not only to Vivian Quarry, but any divng centre on the UK inland sites - ring the centre direct and get it straight from the horses mouth.

Hi to all readers of UK diving If this does not seem too inappropriate? Can I ask all readers to vote for me; I am standing for BSAC national council. As a diabetic I want to encourage as many disabled people into the sport. I also hope to see the age that clubs can start training divers be reduced from 14 to 12 at the individual diving officers discretion. I will also listen to as many divers as possible to see what you want from BSAC. This in turn will help me guide BSAC in the direction that the members desire. If I can ever be of any assistance please do contact me. Many thanks for taking the time to read this. Kind Regards Robert Higgie Email rhiggie@bsac.co.uk

dear trevor the site is very small after a couple of dives you have seen all there is to see and i dont think is is worth paying to dive it when you can go a few mile up the road and dive various other quarrys or the sea.yes i might be a numpty by some standards but i am quite happy doing 90mtrs on mix or doing 6 mtrs when teaching dotty is not dangerouse it is the divers going beyond there limits / gases / kit.and yes there are more fish in my pond than in vivian

Hey guys, I dropped by by accident and read the thread and was thinking, why do they argue about that divesite? I'm from Germany and yes, I did dive Vivian. It was a nice little dive, just to have that feeling in quite clear water. Why does a divesite have to be deep, dark and dangerous? I do like wrecks and deep dives and dark dives, but diving is more than only these three scills. I did Vivian with my 13 year old son and it was great fun. He was able to do a "real" walldive and he found the two fishes in there (I think there are really only two). If I have to commit suicide to be e real diver, I will stay among the "unreal" divers. By the way, I will be in Wales in two weeks and try to drop by to dive Vivian again. chears from Germany

dear "wingnut" you prefered it when it was free, so are you infering that you used to be a numpty by going there? see your previous post 3rd March maybe you still are, just going to "non numpty" sites for macho points. If you don't like the vivs then fair enough, but don't slag off those that prefer not to trespass, or dive unsafe sites all in the name of macho bravado

Ok, so it isn't the biggest or deepest quarry, but its far friendlier, no queing at 6 am to get into the carpark, the vis is better than another northern site I could name, and none of the "my kit is better than yours" or "I went deeper than you" type people that frequent some of the deeper sites. You have proper toilets, can get a hot drink, decent carpark, Air fills and the guys in the centre are friendly. So whether you are just starting off, or just fancy getting wet it is ideal. In the winter when I cannot get into the sea, the thought of lugging a twinset, sidemount what to put in the cylinders, and all the gear needed for deeper quarry dives, just to get a quick dive in does not appeal to me, You can turn up with a 12l and jump in - and remember diving is supposed to be fun, I've stopped going to some inland sites because of the attitudes of some of the other divers who seem to frequent them. So go on, give this place a go, there was enough complaining when it was shut.

Funny no mater what sports you take part in you all ways find the ego types that want to try and put others down, just go out and DIVE.. If a particular site is not to a persons liking post your view but this is only a personal view and may not be the same as every diver that goes to the site. I personally don’t like Dost Hill but lots of others do so is it OK for me to put them down or call them names ..??.. NO... If you answered yes then you may be on the same lonely road... The best way of getting an ego boost is with a well dun for the achievement etc not slagging people of and sounding like a prat. Ho well there more than one on this forum that fits into the prat category... As for the dive site had a look on the way back from the coast one weekend but unfortunately when the place was shut. But I will be back to give it a bash…
