PLACES TO DIVE UK INLAND DIVES

Vivian Quarry

Vivian Quarry is in Llanberis. With Pardarn Lake on your left, keep on the road and don't turn right into the village itself. Go through two sets of traffic lights and just after the second set there is a brown sign advertising the quarrying museum on the left. Follow these signs to the museum carpark. As you enter cross the train tracks again, and on the rightbvthere is a little hut by an archway. The dive centre is in the hut, and the quarry is through the arch. Vivian now has a shop, air, toilets and first aid.

Vivian is borderline for altitiude so care is advised. In the water you can expect upto 18 metres and good visibility. There is a blast house and a storehouse, but this is not very stable and entry is not recommended.

in a word PANTS. viz only 2-3metres in most, pretty much zero to look at down there, and they opened an hour and a half late on the sunday and still charged full whack, which given that my buddy had already driven 2 3/4 hours to get there was just poor business practice. If its your first trip it'll cost you £20, £10 membership, £6 to dive and £4 for the privilege of parking all day. WOULD NOT RECCOMEND

Arran, if you want surreal, try diving Padarn next door, very good vis and huge underwater mud banks at 30m so fine you can swin thru them and out the other side whilst being followed by shoals of Arctic Char, or be a bit more adventurous (Not for trainees) and dive the other quarry very near Vivian

NIce site, very friendly staff, I have taken a few triainee's here and enjoyed the site, carried out a night dive here in Aprl, and found it an interesting dive, quite surreal with the alien in the blasting shed. always good vis albiet a little cold.

Welsh-diver, if you go and see John in the shop at viv and ask him to give Leigh a ring, can sort you out with kit. He's also got a board you can put your details on to find people to dive with.

Hi everyone. I am a teenage diver who has been qualified for a year and am looking for somewhere local to dive. Can anybody give me some info about the quarry i.e. can you rent equipment? is it a registered PADI dive site? what is the safety there like? thanks a lot.

Dived Vivian for the first time today, Vis was about 6m and warter temp was 5 deg. some interesting buildings underwater, nome garden and boats e.t.c. I found the quarry fairly small. the people who worked there were very freindly and great to chat to. i will return in the not to distant future. Also the mining museam cafe accepts soggy divers in dry suits, Great for a brew :)

i myself have taken qualified students to vivien and they loved it thought the stride entry was great, my wife has also brought newly qua;lified students here, she rates the site highly, far more friendly than capernwray, 2 really friendly blokes running it cheap n fast service and air fills, excellent for testing ya kit and breaking back into the season. As for dorothea respect herkeep within your limits keep ya kit serviced and there should be no problems.

Was there last weekend. Viz is great at the moment, and yes the changing rooms are now open. The plans for the new training platforms have been agreed, so look forward to this becoming an even better training site. !

I took a party of trainee's along this Sunday and agree with the comments below, excellent vis and exit. It's been a couple of years since I last ventured here, but that will change, especially when the new training platforms are installed. Talking to the new owners and I agree with what they say - a new entry point just through the tunnel, leading to training platforms, where all divers will be allowed to enter the water, will reduce the walk with full gear and full tanks by a considerable distance. Qualified divers would be expected to exit via the existing exit point, trainee's would be allowed to exit via a stairway leading up from the training platforms. This would have a great effect on making exiting less of a struggle, with no more hanging around in the water waiting while trainee's being helped in removing their fins. They also have a changing room on the car park, which will shortly be opening once it has been fitted out.
