Calling a buddy pair for the Lundy experience:

There is space for a buddy pair to accompany us (Sunstar Sub Aqua club, www.sunstar.org.uk) on our summer trip to Lundy island, Devon.

We board the hardboat Obsession in Ilfracombe, North Devon, on 21st July 2007 for 4 days of diving, staying on the island for the nights of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd. We'll be returning to the mainland on the 24th.

With some of the best diving the UK has to offer, suitable for all levels from ocean diver upwards, as well as an almost guaranteed Seal experience (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jovkbC_1Luo), this is one of our calendar's highlights.

We would be delighted to welcome a buddy pair on board with us, and if you're interested please get in touch asap.

Looking forward to diving,

Chris

The British Society of Underwater Photographers has teamed up with the National Marine Aquarium to stage the first British Splash-In Championship. The event is being held on Saturday July 7, 2007 in Plymouth and the overall winner will be jetting off to the Red Sea to enjoy the top prize of a one week liveaboard diving trip.

This year’s event is a development of the Society’s highly successful annual underwater photography Splash-Ins first held in the late 1960’s, which established the format for similar events that now take place around the world.
All underwater photographers, including the winners of all the splash-ins that took place in the UK during 2006, are being invited to participate in this new event to find the UK’s best underwater photographer.

During the evening of the event the audience at the National Marine Aquarium will be invited to vote for their favourite images from those taken on the day. An independent panel of judges will then choose the best of those images to decide who will win the top prize of the live-aboard holiday, which has been generously donated by Tony Backhurst Scuba Travel. Additional prizes will be awarded to the winner of each of four categories and to the Best Beginner in each category.

In addition to the Splash-In, a Print Competition is being held. The entries will be displayed at the National Marine Aquarium where thousands of visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite pictures. To encourage the many new photographers using compact digital cameras to take underwater pictures separate categories have been introduced so that they do not have to compete with established winners of underwater photography competitions.
Said BSoUP chairman Martha Tressler: “Our previous events have been a huge success but we are building on them as well as aiming to attract more of the new generation of photographers who we know are producing exciting new images. The Splash-In and the Print Competition are for everyone with an underwater camera! And the National Marine Aquarium will be a fantastic setting for our Saturday evening event.”

The Print Competition will run at the National Marine Aquarium from June 16 to July 7, 2007. Photographers who have previously won a major national or international underwater photographic competition or who are professional or semi-professional photographers have their own Advanced category for pictures taken underwater at home or abroad. Others may enter photographs taken in the categories British and Irish, and Overseas. The British and Irish category is being staged in association with The Wildlife Trusts, which is seeking an image for its Marine Bill campaign.

In addition to Tony Backhurst Scuba Travel, those who have so far generously donated attractive prizes for the Splash-In and the Print Competition are Olympus, Ocean Optics, Cameras Underwater, AP Valves, Ocean Visions, Ultimate Sports, Edge Underwater Photography and the National Aquarium charity.

Full details of both events can be found on BSoUP’s web site. Closing date for submitting entries for the print competition is Wednesday, May 23, 2007.

Places are available for divers onbord the Alum Bay Dive Trail with Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology in 2006.

You can bring your own boat at any time. Alternatively we have a boat booked and spaces available on the following dates in 2006:
June 23rd
July 21st
August 18th
Spetember 15th

The Dive Trail Experience
The HWTMA Dive Trail Experience is much more than just a dive! Whether you come with your dive club or as an individual to dive Alum Bay or The Needles you will also receive a full package of “dry” activities, designed to give you more knowledge of your maritime heritage and appreciation of the need to protect and record it.

Underwater Archaeology Centre
The Underwater Archaeology Centre at Fort Victoria, near Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight is the base for the Alum Bay and Needles Dive Trails. All participants will receive free entry to the Exhibition which houses shipwreck artefacts, displays, audio-visuals and information about the work of the HWTMA.

Video Presentations
Using underwater video footage shot by HWTMA archaeologists during survey work, you will be taken on a guided tour of the wreck site before you even get wet! This gives you an opportunity to orientate yourself around the wrecks and their most important features.

Talks
The history of the Needles and Alum Bay wreck sites is a fascinating subject. Our staff will guide you through this history including the ships, protecting the wrecks on the Needles and the secrets uncovered by archaeologists. The talk will also include a pre dive brief, safety instructions and weather/tide implications.

The Dive
The trails have various markers laid around the site to guide you to points of interest. An underwater booklet is available to direct you around the trail. It also contains detailed information on the wrecks, archaeology and marine life.

Red Sea.. Brothers and Elphinstone. I have chartered a boat for the 1st of APRIL 2006 for seven days to visit these legendary sites and have a couple extra spaces. The group at the moment consists of about 12 divers all advanced or above and we look to find the Hammers and Oceanics that are prevalent at this time of year. The trip is cheap, on a nice boat (New) and should be fun as well as exciting. You can see pics and get info about our last couple of trips at www.scubatribe.com. About 400pounds per person not including flights. If you go through Germany flights look like about 250 to 400 pounds. drop me a line if intesrested

SPECIALIST SEAL DIVING @ THE FARNE ISLANDS

If you are interested in join a hard boat for specialist seal diving on any day between 5th & 8th January please e-mail me asap: bburville@hotmail.com

These are shallow (<25m) dives with much of the time spent in <10m!
Due to the weather conditions divers will need drysuits.

The aim of these dives is to get close interaction with grey seals there and divers should be relaxed in the water.

All divers will be asked to sign a disclaimer to ensure they understand that:
1. No dives deeper that 25m max
2. No stage deco dives
3. No feeding the wildlife (seals or fish)
4. There is a small risk of being bitten by seals. Divers should follow some simple rules. Gloves are advised.
Please note these are v gentle animals and in years of diving with them I have only been bitten once, which was more of a playful nip than a bite and was my fault as I was not wearing gloves at the time!

The first days diving will be Thursday 5th Jan.

All dives will be weather dependant at this time of year and the final decision will be 2 days before.
Water temp last Tuesday was 9 C.
Viz was about 4m down to 15m then 7-8m below 15m depth.

This is a very good time of year for seal diving , the pups born in Nov have taken to the water and with patience encounters can be excelllent.

I make no money from these trips. All money to the skipper. Costs are £25 per diver per day including at least 2 dives.

Best regards,
Ben. bburville@hotmail.com
