Proposed new Marine Conservation Zones for Wales

The Welsh Government is proposing up to 10 new Marine Conservation Zones around the coast of Wales. The plans are supported by the Countryside Council of Wales and the Marine Conservation Society.

Although plans are only in the very early stages, the areas being proposed are Puffin Island, NE Menai Strait, North Lleyn, Llanbedrog, Bardsey Island, Mouth of Dwyfor, New Quay, Strumble Head, Skomer and Dale. Some of these (such as North Lleyn and Bardsey) are popular diving areas. If implemented the zones would mean a ban on fishing, dredging and anchoring in some or all of the areas but it is not clear from the current information if this would also preclude the use of shot lines for divers.

At this early stage of the process the exact locations and size of the zones are still flexible and the Welsh Government is seeking feedback and opinions before any decisions are made.
