As part of an art project, I'm looking to locate and raise small amounts of rock ballast that will have been jettisoned overboard from ships arriving in Portland and Weymouth over the past centuries. In theory rocks from many of the world's coastlines will have been off-loaded here before taking on new cargo.
Other than diving on existing wrecks to access the in-situ ballast, I've been unable to get any leads on locations of any ballast dumps.
Does anyone know of areas around Portland where rocks from foreign shores could be found? Might anyone be interested in being part of this artwork and helping retrieve some of these rocks?
