Hi all.

I am thinking of going to Sharm el Sheik for a live aboard trip during the summer.

Has anybody been there lately and can recommend a good tour operator?

Sharm is a great starting point for safari boats. Most of the routes with be Northern though. If you want the more interesting off shore reefs then you'd be better off starting in Marsa Alam, or around there. I agree with previous posters, Tony Backhurst does a good trade and looks after his guests. Ditto for Emperor although their boats do sink! From Sharm you will usually get to do a bit of wreck and a bit of reef. Which will be a great first trip if you're new to diving or Egypt. It's very relaxed and pretty easy diving. I'd steer clear of the Get Wrecked trips, they tend to focus more on wrecks than reef. So you'd miss out, although the wrecks do involve a lt of reef too. Sharm is fun too although a bit too neon these days. If you're new to it try a mini safari, 2-3 days on a boat and the balance on land. This will give you access to the sites without spending all the trip on board. Having done a lot of safaris as a guide and guest it's actually not a problem being on a boat for a week, but you could dip your toe into the water and see how you feel. Try scuba.co.uk to get a good overview. I worked on a Backhurst boat (OK so technically not his but he was the agent) altough we parted on poor terms he deserves a lot of credit and is my first choice when looking for trips, the boats are top notch and the service you get from his firm is second to none.
