Hi, does anyone have any information on the training and the validity of the qualifications gained in South African training schools versus the UK (Scottish) ones. I am looking to start the hse combo course but a weeeeeee bit put back by the 10K fee involved. Any advice would be massively appreciated.

In the UK you will be issued a HSE cert which is good all over the world.

Africa will get you an HSE approved cert which is still pretty much valid every where, but that could always change at least with the UK cert it will always be valid here, important if you are from the UK I think.

If you are put back by the fee of the UK course and will strugle to pay it back I would think again before doing the course as there is no garuntee you will find work.

hey damo, if i had to give anyone advice as where to study i would say south africa in durban at p.d.c you get some of the best training in the world for less money and better climate, with regards to recognition in courses as long as it is recognised by imca you will have no problem, i studied in south africa and been diving in the north sea for years, with no hassle, infact companies around the middle east prefer you to study in south africa, and seeing as the middle east companies are the ones taking on new divers i would advise studying in south africa, best thing to do is ring the relevant schools and have a chat.

hope that helps

diver123, I find it impressive that you can post 4 lines and give me so much to pick at. So I won't. I'll just say that you are wrong. On everything. (Seriously, where did you hear that ME companies 'prefer' the world -leading SA ticket?! wasn't SA was it? cos it sure as hell didn't come from ccc or Algocrazies!)

Diver123, that's some pretty bad advise.

Diving companies in the ME or any other area are not taking on new guys, those days are long gone, even Algosabi wont touch a newbie with a barge pole these days. Most of the clients just wont have it.

Offshore is now pretty much a closed shop, unless you have a strong contact, you have done your time inland or you are very very lucky.

I was one of the lucky ones, by that I mean I made my own luck.

Feel free to pick at what ever you want, strange how i have just been in the middle east diving both iran and saudi, and both trips was filled by majority of newbies, now thats strange and seeing as the rates are so low out there i find it hard that experienced divers would work for that, i am not trying to knock the uk courses they are just very expensive, for the same money and more value i still would head out to south africa, You must know alot because If i rememeber correctly its Imca who govern the waters these days Hse is only the uk... well i am not arguing just trying to help a fellow diver.

Thanks to everyone who has got involved and posted a reply. I am still undecided as to who to train with and have started contacting companies direct to see what their verdict is. So far I have only managed to get hold of the larger companies who deal with SAT diving (which is still a few years down the line for me!!!). Is there a directory for uk inshore and civil companies or any usefull contacts available as had virtually NO LUCK so far on trying to get ahold of them to ask them direct. I understand that the tickets are valid, but just want to clarify if they tend to shy away from the SA qualifications or not? HUUUUGE thaks again in advance.
