I am the nephew of Pete Collins of Southampton & Caldicott. Uncle Pete is no longer with us but had fond memories of his time with the firm. Unusually for Strongwork his background was not Navy as he did his time in the RAF & finished the war in the Paras. Great guy & sadly missed. I saw him in Cadicott when he was working on the bells.

We stayed at the Gateway to Wales and I met a beautiful woman named Brenda Avoth,, she was a barmaid at the hotel.Your weather was the best in 20 years,,, rained only 2 days in 1 1/2 months....

I worked for Strongwork 1971-1974 as an 'Apprentice Diver' initially, 15 a week, under the gentle instruction of Tom Norman and Happy Day. I have just discovered that there may be a Strongwork pension pot which may owe me some money. If anyone else might be in the same situation I'm happy to pass on details.

Hello James, My name is Mike Bray and I worked at Strongwork, Caldicot from 1975 to 1978. As Electronics Engineer I worked on underwater cameras and voice unscrambling systems. As I remember P.O Bob Croft held the Free Air Diving record (Guinness Book of Records) for a while. I was also in Caldicot when the British dive record was set using our 1000ft system with the Tarry Town Dive Control Module. I'm glad to see some of the guy's are still staying in touch. Question - Was Bob Poje the the Vietnam Vet, Helicopter gunner. Best regards, Mike.

I was the design engineer at Strongwork while it was at Caldicot. What a great adventure for a young engineer that was. Engineering that not many people had undertaken before and travel all over the world. I designed all the Star Pices installation and bell moon pool launch equipment, The system installation and conversion of the Stelker for air range diving in the gulf and the system for Aramco which was fitted out onto a ship in Tokyo. A marvellous few years making some very good friends and working with very good engineers.
Mike Bray and I still play golf together every week.

Hello Gerry, I have recently discovered this site and spotted your info and how nice to also find many other members of those days working in Baddesley /Caldicot Thanks for the reminder that I am still on O2. Some names brought to mind such as John Rayner, great Chess partner during flights, and of course Mike Bray. Also clear memories of working on the Drass system with Bob Croft and and eventually completing the 1000 feet in house dive as life support tech. Must give you a call on the land line soon and have a chat. Best regards to all from those days, Tom Norman

Just stumbled across this site. I was at Strongwork for 4 years up until 1976 and remember many of the names well. On the pension question I was amazed to be sent advice from the Department of Work and Pensions advising that Norwich Union as then was held a fund. Saw Jim and Jackie Walsh earlier this year. He is 83 and very well. I am now 70. They were good days. Best wishes to all.

Hello John, I remember you from the Baddesley days with " Nobby" Clark, Harry, Peter Collins, Mike Harman, Dave Periera etc. Hope you are keeping well, Gerry Barlow. Harry took myself and fellow geology graduate, Dave Albiston, in 1973 as he had great hopes for subsea surveys. We both worked on the geology of the St Helier marina, Jersey.

Hello Gerry and all ex Strongwork staff. Another year passed by and Christmas almost upon us time marching on. Just celebrated the 86th birthday and still able to raise the elbow though not as frequently as before. It was such a pleasure to learn of various people especially those who had been out in Khafji on Kingfisher changing the Submarine Hoses that repeatedly would develop a leak. However, somewhat premature but HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all and hope we keep taking in the O2 for a while longer. Best Regards Tom Norman

Hi James, I worked for SDI in the 70's when they moved from Baddersly to Caldicott. I was on the Star Pisces and Seaforth Cape, plus on loan to SubSea International for inspection diving on the Forties Fields. I went on to become HM Principal Inspector of Diving (Scotland). Regards
