HI,

I recently passed my Padi Open Water course. I had previously got my own mask, a Tusa Visulator. On my second open water dive i had problems with it leaking, one of the instructors explained that it was a big mask, that may have been the problem.

I havent used the mask since then, im just wondering if i should buy a new one or if i should just try it out when i havent got the pressure of instructors behind me??

Thanks

I use a Tusa Visualator and your instructor is correct in that it is a large mask, however, it also has reduced depth so the masks volume isn't too large.

I assume you did the old trick of breathing in through your nose while wearing the mask and then shaking your head about to check it stayed on?

Best thing to do is get yourself into a swimming pool and stick the mask on, make sure your hair is out of the way and shove your head under. Check for leaks, and if necessary adjust where the mask sits on your face, and adjust the strap tension. There is nothing inherently wrong with the mask, but if it constantly leaks and won't sit right then you'd be better off trying another mask.

I find that during a dive if the mask starts to shift up a little I'll end up with with a very slight leak, and also some rather unpleasant pressure at the base of my nose. Easiest way to remedy it for me, is to just pull the mask down a bit, clear it and carry on.
