Hi,

Having done a couple of try dives in the last few years I'm finally taking the plunge (no pun intended) and have booked myself to do the PADI open water course in Egypt this coming December. Whilst all the equipment is provided, I'm thinking of buying a mask, snorkel and wetsuit, as the ones I've used in the past haven't been the best!

This is where I run into a bit of a problem. Being a total newbie I haven't got the foggiest what I should be looking for when it comes to decent quality but not too pricey gear.

Basically, once I've passed, I'm planning on doing a bit of diving when I go on holidays with my girlfriend, which is normally Jan - March time in the Carribean (so I'm guessing similar water temp to Egypt in December).

I know the best thing would be to go to a local dive centre (which I have done), however I've got no idea whether they'd suggest stuff that is overpriced or not. For example, a wetsuit I was shown was 60 more expensive than most shops on the internet.

I really don't mind paying a bit for service but I also don't want to get ripped off.

Apologies for the rambling but if anyone's got any suggestions (or ideas of roughly how much I should be spending) I'd really love to hear them, as I'm kind of splashing around in the dark. And that one was intended! ;o)

Many thanks
Sim
P.S. I'm based in Bedfordshire in case anyone's got a really good dive shop recommendation.

Sim,
Water temp in the carribean is normally about 79-81 all year round. In the Red sea the water temp varies a lot it is about 80 in summer but only 68 in winter. I personally would wear a shorty or a skin for the carribean and a 3 mmm full for Egypt or even a drysuit for the winter.
