hi on a dive at stoney my buddys bcd failed to inflate when we reached 20m and i had to grab him and use my bcd to get us to the surface safley but on the surface his bcd inflated fine i found this very strange . but it got me thinking what is the correct procedure if you lose your buddy and are unable to inflate bcd . how would you manage to reach the surface safely from 20m or more including the 3 min safety stop can anyone answer this for me as i like to be prepared for any kind of emergency many thanks from jones boy

You should not need to inflate your BCD just swim towards the surface and the small amount of air in your BCD would increase and give you more lift.

Further to Tony's point some BCD's Low Pressure Inflator nipples are slightly different sizes (some are about a millimeter shorter than the others) - but they work with the wrong fitting LPI hose at the surface usually. when you grab them at depth and push them towards the BCD infaltor assembly they work... need to get the right hose or swap the nipple.

If this wasn't the cause then I would get someone qualified to take a look at the regs and BCD as something else is very wrong !!

hope this helps you and others who haven't spotted this little gem of compatibility before !!

cheers Andrew (ADM Diving) see Q&A Forum.

DRYSUIT SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF AIR AND LIFT TO GET YOU UP ANYWAY YOU ONLY NEED BCD ON SURFACE

I WISH I HAD MY DRYSUIT WHEN I WAS IN EGYPT WHEN MY BCD BURST 25M DOWN

I HAD TO WALK ROUND THE WRECK LIKE OLD SKOOL DIVER

bcd burst - this is where a DSMB comes in handy ;-)
not ideal, but it'll get you back up top.

Could also just manually inflate your BCD....

just to add my thoughts, but personally i'd be dumping everything heavy, weights an obviously usless bc and tank one good breath then an emergency accent breathing out all the way of course, then ask your buddy if you find them to team up with someone willing to buddy them to recover your kit!!! oh and as for the 3 min safey stop i'd leave that one for another dive and poss think chamber in worst case...
