Hi folks,

I might be being a bit thick here. But. I am going to Borneo for three weeks in October and whilst I am there I would like to dive. However, I have never dived before. A friend who's coming with me suggests I get my PADI open water whilst I'm out there as it will be (a) cheaper and (b) far more enjoyable that doing it in the UK.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Or any suggestions for dive schools in Thailand should I decide to go down that route?

Thanks all,

I would suggest a referral course. That is where you do the academics and pool sections before you go and the open water dives on your return. This is great because you do not have to do any studying or bookwork while on holiday.

Hi - I learned in the UK and had a referal to Borneo......... best way to go. Do the pool training and the exams in the UK and then do your open water dives in the warm South China Sea.

Doing the referral will make it more expensive but if it was me then that is the way I would do it to save learning \ doing pool work on holiday.

I am tempted with Borneo this October but was unsure on the weather conditions at that time of year (monsoons etc) have you done much research into what it should be like at that time of year as I would be interested to know..... sorry to Hijack the post.

Hi there, I learned to dive last summer in Cancun through PADI. I done a search for PADI dive centres in Cancun, picked the company I wanted and paid PADI to do the e-learning course. I found this a very good way to do the academic side of it. You work your way through a computer lesson, do the assessments at the end, print of certificate and hand certificate to dive centre. The PADI instructor recapped afew important things for me then it was into the pool. After a morning pool session i was out diving in the afternoon, 2 dives. Next day completed the rest of the required dives and passed the Open Water Course. You don't say where in Borneo you are going? I was in Kota Kinabalu a few years back, done an intro dive, my mates went onto complete PADI course. There were loads of PADI approved dive centres. Hope this helps.

At least you're thinking about this before you get there. My advice, try complete your AOW before you even get there, in the UK. Training in the UK isn't easy, and you will probably do your training in some cold and murky gravel pit. This is perfect for training, as you'll then be able to handle anything Borneo can throw at you. Also, trianing in all the kit here i.e. thick steamers, shortys for extra warmth and hoods, means that byt the time you get to Borneo, you'll probably just use a 3mm shorty, and experience freedom in movement like you'd never imagine. My tip is to train in the worst (realistic) conditions that you're likely to encounter in your diving career, so that when you get to the good ones, boy are they good and you'll really appreciate them!!! Good luck.

hey both the above are right also it means that if you want to dive in the UK u will not have to do your dry suit training costing more money
