I'm new to diving having just completed my Advanced Open Water course, and want to now look at getting a camera to use underwater. I'm an experienced photographer with a top-end digital SLR, but the price of housing and associated kit seems excessive at my stage in diving so I'm looking to get a good quality compact that could be a suitable backup for my SLR on land.

The Canon G9 looks like a good bet especially as it can output in RAW format which I use exclusively with my SLR and find a real boon! However I want to know whether the lack of a very wide angle lens will be a serious compromise, or if it is possible to get around this potential problem with lens attachments etc.

I have a budget of between 500 and 700 for camera, housing and some lights and would appreciate anyone's suggestions.

There seems to be lots of choice and although when it comes to SLRs I know what I'm after, I'm not so sure about compacts!!
