Greetings!

(I do apologise if I have posted this in the wrong place, but its more of a general question than a medical one.)

First off let me say that I’m not a diver. But I have been contemplating learning at an inland place near me. I think its something that I might really enjoy.

However there is a complication in that I have diabetes (insulin controlled). Through Internet research and asking on other forums, I now know the procedure to go through to get started diving.

However… I keep getting this feeling from what I am reading that there is some general misconception that diabetics are dangerous people to be with who are prone to randomly going unconscious. Which in my experience as a diabetic for 12 years, couldn’t be farther from the truth!

Obviously everybody is different, and some people can go unconscious if their blood sugar goes very low. But I can say frankly that I have never under any circumstances gone unconscious from a hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and can most of the time feel one starting from a long way off.

I have also never had any significant problems playing much more strenuous sports, such as football or athletics. The five times Olympic gold medal winner Sir Steven Redgrave is a diabetic… Heck, diabetics can even become firefighers, and you cannot seriously tell me that scuba diving is more dangerous, or carries more responsibility than that!

But I was curious, in general as a community, what are all of your thoughts/opinions on diving and diabetes? Do divers view diabetics as dangerous people to be with? Or is it all just in my head?

I’m curious to know, whether good or bad!

Thanks for your time and thoughts!

Luke

As far as I'm aware the only condition / illness that simply prevents you from diving full stop is epilepsy.

Best thing to do is speak to your doctor or preferably a diving doctor.

hey,
I have advised some on eon this forum before about diving and beeing diabetic as im a first aider. my advice if you are confident go for it. But allways tell your buddy you are a diabetic and dive with a familliar buddy and its all fine. I know the correct ways to deal with people if they are diabetic but ensure your buddy does.
I reckon its fine, you live with the condition you know better than any one if your safe to dive. Iv been talking to a diabetic diver recently if you want me to pass on your details to her email me hughesaar@gmail.com
