I have recently aquired a Sony MPK VX1 Marine Pack and was aiming to locate any of the cameras designed to fit unit. From what I can gather it is an old Sony HI 8 HandyCam but do not know any of the specific models to look out for. Any help or info would be great.

Good afternoon,

I have the same underwaterhousing myself and used it with a VX-1000 and now I am modifying the house for a TRV950E.
You have to know that when you are using a digital or digital-8 camcorder a little electronical modification has to be made otherwise you can not switch the camcorder to ON with the knob on the underwaterhouse. If you need the specific information I can mail you a scan of the PCB-board and the part that needs to be modified.

Best regards,
Jacques Zeeman
The Netherlands.

Hi,

this sounds great, because I have the same Problem. I bought a Digital 8 Camcorder (Sony DCR-TRV 620E) to use it in the MPK-VX1.
My problems:I can't turn it on and the red record-LED has no funktion. So I activated the display to "V-OUT" and pushed the "DISPLAY" button. But when I put the camcorder into the MPK-VXD it will turn off.

Can you send me your information too?

Greetings from germany, cologne.

Hi Jacques Zeeman,

That's great that the MPK-VX1 can work with other sony cameras with a modification. Now that the new sony HDV (high definition) camcorders are out which are not much bigger than a sony VX2000 I was wondering if you have heard of anyone modifying the housing for one of these cameras. Or do you know someone who might be able to do this. This would be the ultimate!

I also have an MPK-VX1, and have spent months trying to get the on-off button working correctly!

Please can someone on this thread please forward me the info for the electronic mod required to get it working correcly with a Sony DV cam (vx1000).

Thanks - you don't know how pleased I am to have come across this thread!

Chris.

Hallo Sani,

I am sorry for my late reaction but I think I can help you. Only a little modification has to made on the PCB-board inside the MPK housing. When you have done this you can turn your camcorder ON and OFF with the bif black knob on the underwaterhousing.
If you are still interested in the information please sent an e-mail to my e-mail address.
My e-mail address is: jz1@hccnet.nl

Hallo Sani,

Volker

How far are you with your experiences? Would it be well possible to send me also the information to the electronic adaptation of the housing? like I out of the correspondence took, should be not too heavy it?! Did you already test the housing, and/or we the experiences are? Dear greetings out of Kiel peoples

Reply on swedish.

Change C003 to a capacitor with higer uF. The LANC protocol demanse that the signal is grounded for at least 140 ms to chanhe status.

Hi guys - in case anyone's just picked up one of these old MPK-VX1 housings I can confirm that the electronics mod works.

The following information comes from Jacques Zeeman in the Netherlands - so he should get the credit!

On the housing's main circuit board, known as RC-27 Board, capacitor C03 (originally 0.1uF) needs to be changed to a capacitor of 22uF.

This is because the LANC protocol demands that the signal is grounded for at least 140ms to change status for power-on.

The RC-27 Board is located at the top of the housing, it's inside the largest black box that has all the wires coming out of it. You'll need to take all the other switches apart also in order to remove all the electronics from the housing so you can work on the RC-27 Board.

Take your time, make some notes and better still take some pictures so you know how it all goes back together!

You'll need some soldering skills to change the capacitor - the good news is the replacement 22uF capacitor should only cost around 20 cents! Capacitor C03 is located around the middle of the RC-27 Board, just to the right of the biggest IC chip - IC01.

Once you've done this - and put it all back together you'll be able to turn your camcorder on and off with the ON/OFF control switch on the housing!

I have this setup working myself with a Sony PD150 3CCD camera inside the housing. The camera's a tight fit but there's enough clearance for it to slide in and out easily and I also have a Century Optics 16:9 adaptor lens fitted. It works well although there are no controls for controlling iris, ND filters and colour balance which have to be left on auto. As the camera's handle has to be removed so that the camera will physically fit into the housing it's not possible to connect audio from the housing's external mic which is a shame. Also the manual/auto focus toggle switch on the housing won't work as on the PD150 this is mechanical switch, not electronic. The external REC LED won't function either - don't know how to get that one working. It's also possible that Sony's 3 chip HDV camera the V1P will fit into the housing as it is a very similar size to the PD150.

I have detailed pictures and a scan of the RC-27 Board pcb available to all who are interested.

This is a great way to get some more useful life out of what is a heavy but easy to use housing.
