Only thing is it's illegal to dive for shellfish in the Republic of Ireland..... only time you can dive for scallops legally is if it's on a registered Scallop bed, you then need a special dispensation from the Dept of the Marine. Also you would be reported pretty quickly by the small inshore clam dredgers and local fishermen. But good luck!

To sakkigrunt whatever ya handle is,listen son, whatever i do is legal and even if it wasnt i will still do it.There are too many people out there who like to assume the role of a water pig, word of advise, simply mind ya own and get on with whatever you do.

Davyboy, how mature of you to answer like that - son. Do you know how old I am? What experience I have? (diving for scallops since 1988). II was only indicating to you that you could get yourself into some trouble if you were diving for scallops in the Republic. Charles Haughey passed the scuba diving Act in 1966 while he was Minister for Agriculture, making it an offence to dive for shellfish while using Scuba or Surface Demand. However, it is still legal to snorkel for shellfish. I gave up clam diving in 2001 after all the closures in Scotland and having to dive too deep. I now live in Kerry. I think it's crazy that diving for shellfish is illegal - I was only trying to be friendly. All the best and good luck with your venture.

hey there,a little harsh of me but i had so much agro around that time, nothing personal meant and i admire your response.Did you have much luck snorkel clamming?I know of certain spots where the beds are no deeper than 4 meters and a good free diver will make his money in a short day.Free diving for shellfish in kerry brings nothing but hassle for anyone unprepared for the smallminded, bigoted, nosy, thick, rumour mongers that i am sure you must have come across. If you are still active in diving commercially you might want to look into norway, anywhere north of the lofoten islands, west coast. The king crab is slowly making his way south from the barents sea and has multiplied to pest control dimensions,so much so that the quota of last year has been doubled and will continue to rise in the forseable future, the earning potential remains enormous and the diving is relatively shallow. All the best.
