As they say, train hard... Race easy :D

Dean,

The best person to contact regarding this would be a 'Commercial dive training company'.

Try www.theunderwatercentre.co.uk and send the query there. You can also view the business directory on this site where you can look up a 'Commercial dive centre' and email them direct through the email tab.

Hope this helps,

Dan

have you done your diver aquaint yet? what sort of time do you run a mile and a half in? and have you been doing chin ups and dips? if you want to do commercial diving after the navy, its ideal background to have as the military train to the highest standards.

There’s too many weird co-incidence’s now, I have spoken to so many people who know someone or have been a part of the Navy past or present, its like one of these secret society’s you hear about! Lol, they all assure me I’ll have the time of my life though, they can’t all be wrong!? My fitness isn’t bad joined a few clubs to help with that, I only just made it through the Acquaint, think it was more determination that got me through really! what is Raleigh like? The WO at DDS said it is all ‘pink and fluffy’ lol

Neil.

well thats all u need mate determination. its no good being fit if u dont want it enough! i was fit as fook but packed in (big mistake)! funny enough the 2 lads who passed out of 9 were probably the least fittest but obviously wanted it more, so go for it mate.

basic is good, as long as you play the game like, its not too bad at all. the phys is easy on basics and you dont get much time to do your own training, thats the only problem. dont women do your head in mate lol!

Hi fellers, I did 23 years in the Mob and I can't say that it did me any harm.

With my diving background it gave me a real boost into getting into my second career. I now work in the gas and oil industry and am currently working in West Africa.

I'm at home for a couple of weeks at the moment but fly back out on 9 March.

All I can say is that a lot of guys leave early because they can't take the discipline. If you can get past that, and realise that as a diver you really do need discipline, then everything else is just plain sailing.

Ian, they say that the written examination for an Aircraft Handler is to name the moving parts of a chock of wood!! LOL!!

Good luck in your future careers.

Pincher,

How hard is it getting into the gas and oil industry as a commercial diver, the WO tried to put us off on the PEDA by telling us that the Navy dont give you the qualifications and experience needed to go on to be a commercial diver, which i thought was a little odd as the Navy train you to the highest ying yang dont they!? i'd be lying if i said i hadn't thought of that as a career after the Navy. lol.

Cheers

Oddly enough, the Navy do not train you up for working as a commercial diver. Yes, the training is top notch but oriented specifically to Mine Clearance and Underwater Warfare.

That said, many ex-Navy divers find that the training required to go over into commercial diving is fairly easy after the initial training they went through.

Many commercial divers will admit to having had experience in the Services.

Hi D3AN,

Pincher is quite. Your Naval training will be orientated towards military activities such as ship hull searches, mine disposal etc. nevertheless, should you subsequently move to commercial, you will have a real advantage, knowing the kits etc etc. The key with commercial is have a trade such as welding etc. Most commercial diving in UK is from Diving Suuport Vessels rather than the platforms. Too expensive to keep!
Still the greatest job in the world!

Buck Taylor
Ninian Central Platform (somewhere off Norway!)

PS - Anyone else remeber those foreshore mud runs. Christ!

Diver Underwater Force Protection
Open to personnel who hold either a military, police or recognised civilian diving qualification. Entry will normally be at Rating level with the exception of those ex-Royal Navy Officers who hold military diving qualifications. Entrants will be subject to a full Service diving medical and an assessment weekend prior to being admitted to the specialisation. As an Underwater Force Protection Diver, you will be trained to air dive to 21 metres as part of a specialist diving team. Full diving training on Service diving equipment will be given and you will be required to keep your diving skills up to date at weekends. Teams may frequently deploy outside the UK. The role will primarily involve underwater searches and minor repair work.
