Thanks for the query.

Amyloid deposition in blood vessels makes them more brittle and liable to bleeding, increasing the risk of haemorrhagic stroke. It is known that diving can cause large fluctuations in cerebral blood pressure. Together, both these factors could lead to a stroke underwater. It would be impossible to predict if/when such an event would occur, but clearly it is a potentially fatal accident.

Personally I would agree with the consultant and GP, that diving is inadvisable. Quite apart from the risk to one's own health, the risks to others (eg. dive buddies) must be considered, and it would not be fair to put others in jeopardy through a foreseeable (and avoidable) situation.

Hopefully your husband can find an alternative pursuit and enjoy the memories and photos built up over the years.
