Question

I am 67 years old and am on finasteride for an enlarged prostrate and I had a cystocopy including a minor cathertisation 6 months ago but am not now under the specialist. I also take simvastin as the doctor found I had high cholesterol but this is now down to normal. Is there any problems for me to go diving in Portugal as I am a PADI advanced open water diver but I do not think I will go down below 20 metres.

Thanks for the query.

Neither of these issues should cause difficulties with diving. High cholesterol is one indicator used to predict the risk of heart disease, but if you are relatively fit and active and don't have other risk factors (eg. smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure) then the risk is low.

Diving does fool the kidneys into excreting more urine, so the only issue with an enlarged prostate is that your bladder may fill up a bit more quickly! So be sure to empty it before each dive if possible.
