Question

Hi, I'm 56 years old & I've been diving 36 years & have just been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia. My doctor has just prescribed Doxazosin 2mg to aid urination. Can I still dive while taken this drug, I'm due to go out to Truk early next year.

Thanks for the query.

Doxazosin is an alpha blocker that can help relax the muscles in the bladder neck and improve urine flow. It's also used to treat high blood pressure, so you should make sure you don't suffer with any light-headedness or feelings of fainting before diving with it.

Provided you tolerate the drug well, there's no other contraindication to diving with it though.

Regards, Dr O
