Dear Doctor Firth

Would a reapired inguinal hernia that was treated at 6 months prevent me from taking a PADI Open Water Course? Would this be something I could self-certify or would I need to have my GP sign me off as fit to dive?

Thanks for your help
Jon

Hi Jon, sorry for the delay in replying.

A repaired inguinal hernia shouldn't cause you any problems with diving. These days the techniques used have reduced complication rates to almost zero.

Unfortunately the PADI questionnaire does ask whether you have EVER had a history of hernia, to which you have to answer yes. However any doctor can sign the form off for you, so hopefully your GP will oblige.

If not, give us a call on 02078064028 and we'll see what we can do.

Kind regards

Dr O
