Malaria medication for West Papua/Irian Jaya.

I have just e-mailed this to e-med.co.uk too so you really only need to answer me once!

I am now in Bali and have been to three different places to ask which malaria meds to take and have received contradictory (contradictory, not just different) advice on what to take.

I'd really appreciate your advice.

Many thanks in advance.

Norethisterone 5mg/daily

I will be taking Norethisterone for the entire time I'm away (starting 3days before departure).

My periods are irregular but would be due to happen some time (early on I think) during the time I am there.

Hi. Your choices are between the following 3: mefloquine (Lariam), doxycycline or Malarone. Some people find Lariam gives them vivid hallucinations/dreams (which some consider a bonus, others a literal nightmare), so if you're diving I'd suggest either of the other two. Doxycycline is far cheaper, but you need to take it for longer (four weeks after return from the malaria area) and it can make your skin more sensitive to sunburn. Everyone reacts individually to these things, so best advice is to try it for a week before you go to ensure you don't have any idiosyncratic side effects.

Enjoy the trip.
