My friend is looking to learn to dive. She is 23 now and when she was a child had a grommet put in her right ear. She did a try-dive without any problems whatsoever, but I'm nervous about her progressing to the PADI OW course without getting it checked out.

What would your advice be?

If the grommet has come out naturally [which they do] and she can equalize ok, e.g. in planes, then all should be fine,
but if she does want a check, her local GP should be able to sort this out as its fairly straighforward.
