Koh Tao is a chilled little island, which is a nice place to stay and hang out for a while. Some nice beaches and good party spots, not like Koh Phangan, this island makes you feel welcomed!

Still responsible for certifying the 2nd largest number of divers in the world (Cairns in Australia being #1, but with higher prices and no beaches!).

A Open Water (beginned dive certification) course here costs about 9,800baht (around 250$us) and a hut for a night 200-50,000 baht depending! Most people would pay 400/night for a room with a fan. Air con/fridge/tv goes for around 1200baht/night. Most dive shops will hook you up with discounts on accommodation if you dive with them.

Theres basically 2 sides to the island, a chilled beach and a party beach (also has sunset). Also a choice between small and big dive shops. The big ones better for the party and the small ones more personal.

I'd recommend Davy Jones Locker, they're a small dive shop with accommodation above them, they also do tech and wreck diving (one of only 2 shops on the island that offer that) so they can take you to the next level as well. They also offer free Nitrox fills. Their website is pretty informative:

And they also have a blog with day-to-day diving life on the island, maybe give you a better idea of what goes on in Koh Tao:
