The diving that you do as a commercial diver is basically just your taxi to work; its what you do when you’re under the water that is your job. Experience such as yours in welding will definitely be of assistance to you when training and trying to get a job, but it’s still worth doing additional training, as welding below the surface is a bit different. With commercial diving if you’re good at working with your hands and not afraid of a bit of hard work then you should do well. If you’re still thinking about commercial diving as a career, The Underwater Centre holds an ‘Introduction to Commercial Diving’ day, where you come and spend the day at the centre, talk to the instructors, who are all highly experienced commercial divers themselves, and you also do a dive in surface supplied gear in a 1.5million litre sea-water tank. It’s good to get information first hand and try it out when you’re thinking of a new career.

This is a terrible time to be thinking about changing career to diving. There is precious little work, loads of brand new divers and loads of experienced hands waiting on the beach. I have 15 years experience air/sat, offshore/civils, and thousands of pounds of extra tickets; I haven't worked this year and its not from lack of trying.
Check out longstreath.com and offshorediver.com, commercial diver sites, and don't just ask the schools if they want your £10000+ (no offense Alf)
