:My great uncle,Oliver Eustace Knowles, served on The Conway as a young man.Unfortunately I know very little about him, except that he was awarded an OBE,but again I don't know why! If anybody can help me with this I shall be very pleased to hear from them. Many thanks. : Graeme, Your grandfathers ship was 114 years old when she was being towed by two tug boats through the Menai Straits. North Wales - the tow ropes broke, and she drifted onto a beach in the Straits - ships back broke, on Tuesday 14 April 1953. HMS CONWAY was launched in June 1839 as HMS NILE, a 90 gun battleship. 240 feet long, and 4,375 tons. She ended up as a training ship. You should be able to get much more information from the local newspapers as you now have a date to work from. Good Luck. Signed Jim Phillips.
