I can't comment too much on the camera - although maybe it is on the pricey side. However, the book to which you refer is really morelike a product guide for Sea & Sea, it is very expensive and doesn't really do a very thorough or careful job on the techniques of underwater photography. Try Jim Church's Nikonos guide. You wll find lots of really practical explanations and much cheaper.
