How come not one person has asked Debbie where she trained, what equipment she has and how many dives she has done? How can anyone offer to safely dive with someone until they know these facts?

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me its summed up in two words "self rescue". I'm quite willing to dive with novice divers however many dives or whatever level they are at (and I've actually dived with Debbie).

I don't expect anyone to save me when it hits the fan, not even my regular dive buddies.

The problem with cert level and numbers of dives, is that you can back to back PADI courses.... and 300 dives in Capernwray, doesn't mean you can dive Scapa Flow safely.

Bottom line is that you should talk to the person, rather than playing 'cert card top trumps' on a buddy board.

Your posting is an unfair reflection of what I said. I like to know where people have trained and the number of dives they have done because people trained in the Red Sea, who have only dived in the Red Sea, are often ill equipped for the rather different conditions in the UK. I like to know whether people dive in dry or wet suits as this gives me a better idea of acceptable dive depths and lengths. I agree that this can be easily discussed in a conversation, but it can be just as easily placed in a posting. Like yourself I am happy to dive with novices, what worries me is when 2 novices to uk diving find each other through this board, don't know what to ask and get stuck in the murky depths of a quarry with inadequate hired equipment. I find your point about self rescue to somewhat miss the point, there is another diver down there with you. As for cert top trumps, I don't believe I mentioned certifcations at all and cannot understand why you bought it up.

You said: "How can anyone offer to safely dive with someone" ..... safety is a two way thing. Being happy to dive with novices and potentially rescue them is one thing, but who's looking after you ?. Surely self rescue features very highly when you are diving with novices you can't rely on ? or did I miss that point too.

Whats unfair about this, is that you questioned the safety of everyone who had posted a reply to Debbie, and thats what I took exception to.

Sorry, have not explain my point properly. I feel that this bulletin board presents a hazard for inadequately trained and unexperienced divers. I am quite happy for experienced divers to dive with novices as they know the score, potential hazards and solutions. What annoys me is that nobody ever asks basic questions here that might increase a novice divers awareness of conditions and may make them think twice about dving with another complete novice.

Good point !.

Unfortunately the situation you describe seems to be a feature of PADI training (myself included), that has no club structure to assist new divers.

One solution is for people to train with a PADI centre that has its own club attached... and thankfully this seems to be getting more widespread. (or BSAC)

For everyone else, there's always a 'Buddy board'.

sorry for poking my nose in lads and lasses,
don't you think we should all be a bit more positive about this site it's been a lifeline for me, when i first started having joined a club and found that they only dive weekends, ukdiving was just what i needed now i have a good group of buddies some more experienced some less but we all enjoy our diving and learn of one another thats the main thing surely. hope everyone stays within there limits and training and plenty of fun safe diving for every level.

geoff your right, god bless ya. but most men see this as more than a dive site. if a woman postes a message its a free for all. poor women i say. but if you (geoff) want a real fun dive then meet me and my buddy down stoney. we have more than 100 dives at that site and have a great laff too. i hate dives that want to get tec and look down on people that just dive for fun.
